About Drive Texas Safe

Drive Texas Safe is a collaboration between the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. The website serves as a resource for traffic safety stakeholders and the public at-large with information about the safety issues facing Texans on our roads.  
For fiscal year 2026, the project focuses on the issue of speeding. For more information on the research behind the project, please review our crash analysis report and infographic.     More than 1 in 4 of fatal and injury crashes in Texas were speed related.

    38%

    Just over one-third (38%) of speed related crashes occurred on Texas roads with a speed limit of 35-45 mph.

  • 50%

    About 50% of the speeding over limit crashes occurred in dark conditions. 

    95%

    Nearly 95% of the speeding related crashes were a failure to control speed or driving at an unsafe speed. Less than 5% were speeding over the speed limit.
